This lavender isn’t something we ordered out of a catalog.

It showed up here—on our land.

Years ago, while walking the greenhouses at Goodwin Creek Gardens, a lavender sprout was noticed that looked different from the rest. The leaves were more silvery. The shape was looser but elegant. And it just… kept blooming.

It was watched for seasons. Cuttings taken and grown out. They were tested it in containers, in the ground, indoors, outdoors. And what was found was something special enough to name and share.

That’s how Goodwin Creek Grey came to be.

This hybrid is closely related to historic French lavender hybrids such as Lavandula × heterophylla and Lavandula × allardii, sharing their long bloom period and ornamental foliage. Its slightly pungent aroma, long stems, and elegant form make it ideal for containers, landscapes, and trained topiaries.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

Goodwin Creek Grey has soft, silvery, slightly toothed leaves that look beautiful even when it’s not in bloom. The plant forms a semi-open to full shrub—never stiff, never messy.

When it blooms, the stems rise long and clean, carrying deep purple flowers above dull purple bracts and calyces. It’s graceful without trying to be flashy.

But the real surprise is how long it flowers.

In mild climates, it can bloom most of the year outdoors. And indoors—on a sunny windowsill, porch, or sunroom—it’s one of the most reliable winter-blooming lavenders we’ve ever grown.

WHY WE LOVE GROWING IT

  • We discovered it right here on our property
  • It blooms longer than almost any lavender we grow
  • The foliage stays beautiful year-round
  • It does well in containers and in the ground
  • It’s one of the best lavenders for winter bloom indoors
  • It makes a lovely small topiary

Its scent is a little stronger and more pungent than sweet English lavender, but many people love that sharper, classic lavender edge.

HOW IT GROWS

  • Plant type: Evergreen shrub
  • Sun: Full sun
  • Soil: Very well-drained soil
  • Water: Moderate—don’t let roots stay wet
  • Zones: 8–10
  • Growth habit: Semi-open to dense shrub

Good drainage matters more than rich soil. This plant likes its roots on the dry side.

SIZE & BLOOM

  • Mature size: About 3 ft. tall × 3 ft. wide
  • Stem length: 8–12 inches
  • Flower color: Deep purple
  • Foliage: Sage green to silvery gray
  • Fragrance: Slightly pungent

GROWING INDOORS

This is one of the few lavenders we truly recommend for indoor winter bloom.

For best results:

  • Give it at least 5 hours of direct sun daily
  • South-facing windows are best
  • Let soil dry slightly between waterings
  • Good air movement helps

BEST USES

  • Containers and patio plantings
  • Indoor winter-blooming lavender
  • Landscape focal points
  • Trained topiary
  • Mild-climate gardens

HOW TO KNOW IT’S RIGHT FOR YOU

Choose Goodwin Creek Grey if you:

  • Want a lavender with a real story
  • Love silver foliage year-round
  • Garden in mild climates—or grow indoors
  • Enjoy long bloom seasons
  • Like growing something truly unique

Scholarly and Readable, Too
Format: Paperback
I read the first volume in this series (about the Great Depression), and now I'm in the midst of this one. Kennedy's very-lucid prose keeps the reader moving along, and of course, the sweep of the story he's telling is nearly-irresistible. But in lamer hands, the prose might well have bogged down in turgidity--not so in this case!

Good but not as good
Format: Kindle
Freedom From Fear #1 was one of the most interesting and informational books I've ever read. Part Two was interesting but I did not learn much more about the war than I had known before other than the fact that, while Japan lost the war, Anglo-Saxons are no longer in control in the Far East. I somewhat disagree with his ending ideas about the "good" war, that it wasn't so "good" after all in it's outcome. However, those who fought in it and their families would probably disagree.
