Calathea zebrina (Zebra Plant)

Calathea zebrina is a tropical foliage plant known for its bold, velvety leaves marked with distinctive zebra-like striping. Native to the rainforests of Brazil, it belongs to the Marantaceae family and displays the characteristic leaf movement associated with prayer plants, with foliage subtly adjusting position throughout the day.

The leaves are large, oval to lance-shaped, with a soft, matte texture. Each leaf features deep green striping layered over a lighter green base, creating strong visual contrast. The undersides are typically a rich purple, adding depth when viewed from different angles.

Key Features

Calathea zebrina is valued for its dramatic foliage and strong visual presence. The velvety texture of the leaves distinguishes it from many other indoor plants, giving it a more tactile, premium appearance.

It forms a dense, upright clump, making it suitable as a feature plant in interiors. Compared to finer-leaved species, its larger foliage creates a more structured and bold look.

As with most calatheas, it is more sensitive to environmental conditions than hardier indoor plants, requiring consistent care to maintain optimal appearance.

Growth Habit and Size

Calathea zebrina grows as a clumping plant, with leaves emerging from the base on upright stems.

Indoors, it typically reaches between 0.6 and 1 metre in height, with a similar spread. Growth is moderate when provided with stable warmth, humidity, and consistent moisture.

Care Requirements

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium light conditions but should be protected from direct sunlight, which can scorch or fade the leaves.

Watering

Requires consistently moist soil. The top layer of soil can dry slightly between watering, but the plant should not be allowed to dry out completely.

Water approximately once per week, adjusting depending on temperature and humidity. It is sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering.

Soil

A well-draining yet moisture-retentive mix is essential. A blend of indoor potting mix with perlite and coco peat is suitable.

Temperature and Humidity

Thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid exposure to cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.

High humidity is important for maintaining healthy foliage. Low humidity often results in browning edges or leaf damage.

Maintenance

Remove damaged or yellowing leaves at the base to maintain appearance. Leaves can be wiped occasionally to remove dust and preserve their velvety finish.

Feed lightly during the growing season using a diluted liquid fertiliser. Avoid excessive fertiliser application.

Repot every 1–2 years as needed. Division can be used for propagation during repotting.

Common Issues

Brown leaf edges are commonly caused by low humidity, inconsistent watering, or mineral buildup in water.

Leaf curling may indicate underwatering, dry air, or environmental stress.

Yellowing leaves are often a result of overwatering or poor drainage.

Calathea zebrina may be prone to pests such as spider mites in dry conditions.

Applications

Suitable for:

Indoor feature planting
Residential styling with bold foliage contrast
Office and commercial interiors with controlled conditions
Bathrooms or humid environments
Layered plant arrangements

Its large, patterned leaves make it effective as a focal point in interior plant design.

Clean Ingredients Without Compromising Performance
Flavor Name: Peppermint, Size: 5.25 Ounce (Pack of 1)
My wife purchased Davids Fluoride Free Toothpaste because she wanted a cleaner alternative without all the unnecessary additives found in many mainstream brands—and it’s exceeded expectations. First, the ingredient list is refreshingly simple. No fluoride, no SLS, and none of the artificial extras you often see in traditional toothpaste. It feels good knowing we’re using something more thoughtfully formulated. What really stands out is that it actually works. It leaves your mouth feeling genuinely clean and fresh, not just artificially minty. The texture is smooth, it foams lightly (without being overwhelming), and it rinses clean without any residue. Over time, her teeth look brighter, and it does a great job keeping plaque under control. The mint flavor is crisp and natural—not overly sweet or harsh. It strikes a nice balance between refreshing and subtle. It's safe, sturdy and does not bother my wife's sensitive teeth. The size is perfect to keep at home. If you’re looking for a fluoride-free, SLS-free toothpaste that still delivers whitening and antiplaque benefits, Davids is an excellent option. It’s a clean upgrade that doesn’t sacrifice performance.

Pros and cons listed below, you decide
Flavor Name: Peppermint, Size: 5.25 Ounce (Pack of 1)
II like the flavor (peppermint) and that is is a healthier option for tooth paste - BUT - the cap and tube needs redesigning. The cap is hard to screw on most of the time flying onto the counter or the floor and also easy to confuse which end to screw on if you're not paying attention as one end is to puncture the end of the tube to get the paste out and the other to cover the tube after use. The tube is too hard to get all the product out and to roll because I believe it is made of metal instead of plastic which is good but not so good. This is already very expensive and you cannot get all the toothpaste out. The cons are why I gave the 3 stars otherwise this is a 5 star for me and my husband.
