Maranta leuconeura Kerchoveana Variegata ('Beauty Kim', 'Fiesta')

Maranta leuconeura Kerchoveana Variegata ('Beauty Kim', 'Fiesta') is a variegated rabbit-track Maranta with oval leaves, paired dark blotches near the midrib, and irregular cream to pale green markings. Some leaves carry broader pale sectors, while others show smaller speckles or narrow streaks beside the darker markings.

The plant grows as a low rhizomatous Maranta, spreading more than it rises. A healthy pot becomes fuller through basal growth, creeping stems, and repeated leaf production rather than a tall central stem. The leaves also lift and lower through the day-night cycle, adding movement to the variegated pattern.

Rabbit-track variegation on Maranta Kerchoveana Variegata

  • Leaf pattern: Cream and pale green variegation over rabbit-track markings.
  • Dark markings: Paired dark blotches sit in rows near the midrib.
  • Growth habit: Low, spreading, and clump-forming from shallow rhizomes.
  • Pattern variation: New leaves can differ noticeably in the amount and placement of pale tissue.
  • Leaf movement: Blades sit more open in daylight and lift again as light drops.

Brazilian forest conditions for variegated Kerchoveana Maranta

Maranta leuconeura is native to warm, wet tropical parts of Brazil, where filtered light, organic ground material, and steady humidity shape its low growth. Variegated Kerchoveana Marantas need the same basic conditions indoors: warmth, bright indirect light, stable moisture, and an airy root zone.

The rabbit-track markings come from the darker blotches placed in rows near the midrib, while the variegated parts add cream and pale green breaks across the blade. Variegation is naturally uneven from leaf to leaf. Pale sectors contain less chlorophyll than green tissue, so mixed green-and-variegated growth usually produces new leaves more reliably than very pale shoots.

Care for Maranta Kerchoveana Variegata

  • Light: Provide bright indirect light for clean leaf expansion. Direct sun can scorch the pale leaf sections.
  • Watering: Water when the top 20–35% of the substrate is dry. Repeated full dry-downs can cause curled leaves and brown edges.
  • Water quality: Use rainwater, filtered water, or low-mineral water where possible, as hard water and fertilizer salts can mark the soft leaf edges.
  • Substrate: Use a fine, airy, moisture-retentive mix with drainage material so the shallow roots receive both moisture and oxygen.
  • Drainage: Empty excess water after watering and avoid pots where the lower mix stays wet, sour, or airless.
  • Humidity: Aim for 50–60% humidity or higher if the home is very dry.
  • Temperature: Keep the plant at 18–27°C and protect it from cold draughts, cold windowsills, and wet substrate below about 15°C.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. Heavy feeding can stress roots and mark leaf tips.
  • Pruning: Remove tired stems and trim overly long growth above a node to encourage a denser pot.
  • Repotting: Repot only one size up, preferably during active growth, because oversized pots hold too much moisture around the rhizomes.
  • Propagation: Use divisions or node cuttings that include healthy green tissue and active growth points.
  • Mineral substrates: In semi-hydro or inert substrates, keep moisture steady, maintain warmth, and flush regularly to prevent mineral buildup around the fine roots.
  • Placement: Keep it away from hot glass, radiators, cold draughts, and exposed shelves where the soft leaves dry too quickly.
  • Growth rate: This Maranta usually spreads at a moderate pace in warmth and steady humidity, with slower side growth in cool or dry conditions.

Stress signs on Maranta Kerchoveana Variegata leaves

  • Brown patches on pale areas: Check direct sun, dry air, irregular watering, and heat near glass.
  • Crispy margins: Review humidity, repeated dry-downs, hard water, and fertilizer buildup.
  • Soft yellowing leaves: Inspect the root zone for overwatering, compacted substrate, poor drainage, or a pot that stays wet too long.
  • Root rot risk: Soft stems, sour-smelling substrate, and collapsing lower growth point to wet roots and low oxygen around the rhizomes.
  • Leaves curling lengthwise: Check dry roots, cold exposure, or heat near windows and radiators.
  • Mostly green new leaves: Variegation can shift by shoot. Trim persistent all-green runners only when the plant still has enough mixed green-and-variegated growth to stay strong.
  • Leaf spots: Remove marked leaves if needed, keep the foliage from staying wet for long periods, and improve airflow around dense pots.
  • Pests: Check for spider mites, thrips, mealybugs, and scale-like pests, especially around stems and leaf undersides. Fine webbing, pale speckling, sticky residue, or white clusters respond best to early cleaning and isolation.

Pet-friendly handling for Maranta Kerchoveana Variegata

Maranta leuconeura Kerchoveana Variegata is generally regarded as pet-friendly and is not treated like calcium-oxalate aroids. Repeated chewing can damage the soft leaves and may upset a pet’s stomach, so keep it out of reach of animals that nibble plants.

The name behind Maranta leuconeura Kerchoveana Variegata

Maranta leuconeura É.Morren is an accepted species in Marantaceae and was published in 1874. The genus name Maranta honours Bartolomeo Maranta, a 16th-century Italian physician and botanist. The species epithet leuconeura refers to pale or white veining. Kerchoveana is recognised by the paired rabbit-track blotches arranged near the midrib.

Great Wallet
I'm pretty particular when it comes to things that I need to carry at all times when I'm out. When looking for a new wallet back in 2014, I initially went with the oft recommended Saddleback Leather Medium Bifold. Initially, that wallet seemed to be both durable and well made. Unfortunately, after several months in the back pocket, two things became clear: first, the leather was so taught that it was breaking my credit cards in half at the pinch point of the credit card slot. Second, what I took for durability in the thickness of the leather quickly turned into nuisance as I ended up with an inch thick brick that ruined my seating comfort. I called Saddleback regarding the first point and they told me that it was a known issue and if I didn't like it I could send the wallet back, which I did. That left me at a crossroads with a new requirement: I wanted a leather wallet that was thin enough to not be uncomfortable, held 6 credit/id cards and a handful of bills. I searched around until I came across Bellroy. The travel wallet seemed to check all the boxes and added some features I never knew I needed. After 6 years of use, I finally decided that the original travel wallet I bought in 2014 had run its useful life, down to holes in the leather and all. I liked it so much, I bought another one. There are some subtle differences which I will highlight below. 1. Fits in Your Pocket This is ostensibly the best feature of the wallet. It is large in the two dimensions you shouldn't care about and thin where it counts. I have not found a pair of pants that I would wear that it doesn't fit in. With my passport, 6 credit/id cards, and a dozen bills it is roughly 3/4 inches thick. Fabulous. 2. The Right Pen I had no idea how useful the pen would be. I find occasion to pull it out at least once a week. I used to carry the wonderful Fisher Space Pen, but no longer do as this fills the role in a much for optimized way. Bellroy is kind enough to include an ink refill with every wallet and I still have the refill from 2014. That's not to delegitimize the previous point; the kind of things I write are forms and other short memos. I wouldn't use the pen to write a novel. The new wallet looks to have a pen that Bellroy have either white labelled or made themselves. I haven't yet written with it, but if it is at least as good as the Walkie it replaced, things should be fine. 3. Added Security The new wallet takes the split billfold and adds a flap that conveniently hides away the back section from prying eyes. In theory this seems like a useful feature. In practice, the flap is not quite long enough to allow for more than one or two bills without the cavity being visible when the wallet is opened. The new wallet also has RFID shielding which I don't recall being a feature of the old wallet. It sounds like a useful feature now that at least one of my credit cards has a contactless payment feature. 4. Leather It's a thin wallet so you should expect the leather to be thin as well. I got 6 years out of the first wallet and I'm not a guy who is easy on wallets. It has been in my pocket on rooftops doing solar installations, in machine shops, and on every kind of seat imaginable. My old wallet has been fully submerged in water more than once. With all that punishment, it outlasted the warranty by two times. None of the stitching has failed and the only real damage is two small holes in the outer leatherwork. If you are a business traveler, this should go out of style before it is rendered unusable from wear. In short, this is a great wallet for everyday use. I approve to the extent that I didn't look for a new choice when my old one wore out.

Very handy
Color: Sienna
I purchased it because I still use paper boarding passes. With luggage claim paper, your passport and ID card, things could get quite messy if you try to put everything in your bag or backpack’s compartment. This one organizes all those nicely. Because of its size it accommodates multiple boarding passes and luggage claim papers easily. (They used to get crumpled in international flights, and It annoyed me.). Yet it is compact enough to carry in your pocket. One negative is its price. It is expensive. But it is a quality product. Nice leather and well made. If you are willing to spend some $, this will spare you from searching your boarding pass and passport frantically at boarding. Highly recommend.

Excellent product, great for travel
Color: Cocoa
I just got back from a business trip and this is by far the most useful passport holder/wallet I've ever used. Lots of room for cards, bills, boarding passes, and a second passport and still folds very flat. Leather is good quality, and is very well put together. Since its too big for my pocket and will mostly live in my briefcase, I expect it to last a very long time. The only drawback is the high price, especially since the leather is probably not full grain (it's not advertised as full grain, so we can assume it's not). But it fits my needs perfectly, even if it is a little overpriced.

Highly recommend.

My favorite purchase for a recent trip across three continents. Fits in pocket (I mean it’s a tight fit, but it will fit). Perfect in cargo pant pocket. Has two separate compartments for paper bills which is nice - you can keep your home currency in one and travel currency in the other. Really sleek looking. Bought four of these and we all loved ours. Highly recommend.

Nice wallet. Just received it and used on trip to Italy
Too early to rate for durability, but it came quickly, looks nice, and appears to be well-made. Was a godsend on my trip to Italy and back. With all the times you have to show your passport (usually dragging your luggage with you), my passport was always at the ready, secure in my wallet in my pocket. I would not travel abroad without it. Not only that, it will serve as my daily wallet as well
