Discover the Sweet Ease of Burbank Spineless Prickly Pear

For homesteaders, gardeners, and sustainable growers who want the bounty of cactus without the hassle, Burbank Spineless Prickly Pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) offers a rare gift. This spineless variety produces large, tender pads and sweet fruit that can be harvested with confidence and ease. If you’re looking to grow a practical, edible cactus that supports animals, dryland gardens, and homesteads, Burbank Spineless is a game changer.

This cactus grows vigorous, sprawling clumps with thick, fleshy pads that are smooth and free of painful spines. The pads, known as nopales, are a nutritious vegetable popular in many cuisines, while the pear-shaped fruits burst with sweetness when ripe. In warmer zones, Burbank Spineless can reach 6 to 10 feet wide, creating a lush, edible hedge or living fence with minimal maintenance.

Why Grow Burbank Spineless Prickly Pear Seeds?

  • Spineless pads make harvesting safe and easy for home use and livestock

  • Produces delicious, sweet fruit perfect for fresh eating, jams, and beverages

  • Highly drought-tolerant and thrives in poor, dry soils

  • Provides nutritious forage for animals like goats and chickens

  • Ideal for homesteads, permaculture designs, and dryland or xeric gardens

  • Hardy in USDA zones 8–11 with exceptional heat tolerance

Versatile Uses for Food, Feed, and Landscape

  • Fresh nopales are a staple in cooking, rich in fiber and antioxidants

  • Fruit can be eaten raw, juiced, or turned into preserves and sauces

  • Provides shade and shelter for livestock and wildlife

  • Attracts pollinators when flowering, supporting biodiversity

  • Creates natural fencing or privacy hedges in arid landscapes

Growing Burbank Spineless – Practical Tips for Success
Soak seeds overnight to improve germination. Sow in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix, lightly covering seeds. Maintain warm temperatures (75–85°F) and keep soil moist but not wet until sprouts appear, usually within 2–3 weeks.

Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost in full sun with sandy or rocky soil that drains well. Space plants 3–5 feet apart to allow room for sprawling growth. Water sparingly once established, allowing soil to dry completely between watering. Mulch lightly to preserve moisture and control weeds.

A Prized Heirloom for Modern Homesteads
Burbank Spineless Prickly Pear is a favorite among growers who value edible landscaping without the challenge of spines. Its heritage traces back to traditional cactus cultivars adapted for easy harvest and maximum yield. Growing this cactus invites both practicality and beauty into your garden.

Add Burbank Spineless Prickly Pear seeds to your garden and enjoy the ease of spineless harvests paired with delicious, nutritious cactus fruit. Experience the satisfaction of growing a versatile, drought-tolerant cactus that feeds your family, animals, and landscape year after year.

Works great for scent work! Bounce is great for air retrieve!
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo, Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
My dog doesn’t know he loves them yet but I do! They are a little softer so when we do air retrieve, I don’t have to worry as much about his teeth! I’m hoping he will learn to find them by smell vs sight. We often play in the evenings and he tends to loose his ball. Love chuck it! Right now, we have about 10 chuck it balls! The tennis balls don’t work for air retrieve! Chuckit does!!! Love the thrower too! Saves my arm!!!!

I guess the smell is offputting
Size: 2-pack, Style: Duo
My dog loves chocolate stuff. But for some reason, wasn’t a huge fan of these balls. She played with them a little bit, but they’re not her favorite.

Whistle away my friend!
Size: 2 Count (Pack of 1), Style: Pack of 2
Love it! My dog loves it! The people at the dog park love it! The whistle is the best thing about these balls but the hard durable rubber and the denseness of the ball really make it fly. Let me quickly breakdown each of these: First the sound is like a...well, whistle coming from a human but oscillating and slightly different. It helps the dogs track where it goes and helps them find it better when it is getting dark (while flying of course, not when it is stationary). It barely makes a sound when throwing it with the wind but really howls when throwing it into the wind. This is why you get this ball and most everyone at the dog park perks up and wonders what that is, asks about it, and thinks it is very cool; which it is! Next is the durable rubber which doesn't have a single bite mark or split yet in 4 months of constant daily play for about 1 1/2 hours every day! The dog chews it as he brings it back and other dogs steal the ball and run with it while "killing" it perpetually and it has held up great. I don't claim this is going to be Kong ball durable but it is very well chosen rubber. Last is the denseness of the ball which really makes to go far in a chuckit launcher. One doesn't really notice how far this goes until going back to a tennis ball and realizing how short a tennis ball goes compared to this. The whistler ball, and presumably other chuckit rubber balls (glow, irregular bounce), go 30-40% farther when I throw then using the longest chuckit thrower. This is excellent and wears my retriever out even faster; not to mention the rippling muscles he has from sprinting that whole way! Overall I got both ball several months ago and we started with the blue ball and haven't had to touch the orange one yet. This is his goto ball at the park and it is the most popular ball, bar none, for all the dogs to steal. The bright blue aspect, the rubber aspect, the sound, and exclusivity of it make it coveted by dogs and owners. I might be gushing and glowing over this ball a bit much but I tend to do that when something unexpected ends up being part of your everyday life and blows you away at how wonderful it is.
